Definition
Absenteeism is unplanned agent absence from a scheduled shift, distinct from attrition, which measures agents permanently leaving the organisation.
It is tracked as a rate, absent shifts divided by scheduled shifts, and feeds into shrinkage as one of its unplanned components.
Chronic absenteeism concentrated in a small group of agents behaves differently, and needs a different response, than occasional absenteeism spread evenly across a team: one is a management and engagement problem, the other may simply be life. Separating those two patterns in reporting, by tenure, team and day of week, is more useful than tracking a single blended absenteeism rate.
Why it matters
- Absenteeism is usually the largest single component of unplanned shrinkage, so it moves real headcount requirements.
- A rising rate is an early warning of burnout, often visible months before attrition data confirms it.
- Blended rates hide problem pockets: a 5% site average can contain a team running at 12%.
